Newport Cares Summer Food Boxes

For the past five years, NMO-UMC has provided Summer Food Boxes for the same students who received backpacks through the Newport Cares Backpack Program.  These boxes are assembled annually on the third Sunday of May as part of the Change the World weekend.  This year, 48 Summer Food Boxes were put together and distributed.

As our response to the Resurrection of Jesus, this ministry begins on Easter Sunday with the Change the World Tree that is placed in the church entryway.  Specific food items needed for these boxes are listed on different flowers that are placed on the tree.  People then “adopt” a flower or two and bring in the food items over the next several weeks, where they are placed under the Easter cross in the sanctuary.

This ministry also receives food items through the national Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive that is annually conducted by the US Postal Service on the second Saturday of May.  All food items collected through the Newport zip code (24128) come into the church and are sorted and processed for inclusion in the summer Food Boxes.
